Physics exam tips

  • 52 days until the first GCSE Physics exam.
  • 54 days until the first A-Level Physics exam.

Are you ready?

5. Read the question

Check the command words. Read the whole question. Use your brain. All the physics is in your brain. Don’t forget to visualise the context. Draw a sketch if it helps. Check how many marks the question is worth. How many answers should you give?

4. Look for red flags

Does the question say, “changes?” What’s the change? State whether there’s an increase or a decrease. Check for unit prefixes. Check for values given in previous parts of the question.

3. Key words and definitions

Has the examiner used a technical word or phrase? Define it in your answer. Has the examiner phrased something weirdly as though to avoid using a technical word? Use the technical word yourself.

2. Look for hidden values

Does the question state something starts from rest? Then don’t forget the initial velocity is 0 m/s. Is something in freefall? Then you know it’s acceleration. Every word in a question has been carefully chosen. Don’t skip over any of them

1. Memorise the equations

Fact check, one plus one does not equal three. It does, in fact, equal two. Image Credit: https://www.pexels.com/photo/1-1-3-text-on-black-chalkboard-374918/

It doesn’t matter that you get given equations, don’t neglect learning them. Having a dictionary didn’t make you a master wordsmith like Shakespeare. To be able to combine equations, they must all be in your head. Commit to learning them. Invest the time.
